There was a lot of speculation about what direction the Ghostbusters franchise might take in cinema given the last movie released with Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. The cast was quite a departure from the original guys in street cleaner suits, and the chemistry was eclectic. Comic fans saw how IDW Publishing embraced the concept, and released a good amount of books embracing the new team, but Ghostbusters fans in general wondered what the future held for those who punch protoplasm. Loose lips sink ships, and there wasn’t a lot of chatter about what was on the horizon for Ghostbusters, at least not publicly.
The silence has now been broken.
Jason Reitman — the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman — is on point to give us a new Ghostbusters film in the summer of 2020.
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set,” Reitman told Entertainment Weekly. “I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
So it’s official!
